The party doesn’t start until Kesha shows up, and the 37-year-old pop singer kicked off July 4th with a new song. Her latest hit, «Joyride», - is the first single Kesha released after settling her lawsuit against producer Dr. Luke. In the new track, Kesha returns to her original pop roots.
«Are you a man? 'Cause I’m a bitch / I’m already rich, just looking (Mm) / This party’s boring, I’m about to leave», - Kesha sings in the first verse before moving on to the chorus, which goes: «Rev up my engine until it purrs / Keep it kinky, but I come first / Beep beep, bitch, I’m on the street / Sit down, loser, for a joyride».
The line «sit down, loser» seems to be a reference to the famous line from the movie «Mean Girls» by Regina George, who says, «Get in, loser, we’re going shopping».
This fun dance track was released ten years after Kesha accused Dr. Luke in 2014 of drugging her and sexually assaulting her. She also claimed at the time that this led to her developing an eating disorder. Dr. Luke denied her accusations and countersued Kesha. In 2016, a judge dismissed all claims of violence by the singer «Cannibal», - stating that the lawsuits were filed after the statute of limitations had expired.
The legal battle between Kesha and Dr. Luke continued for many years until they reached an agreement last year. In June 2023, the former musical partners released statements announcing the end of their bitter dispute.
«Only God knows what happened that night», - Kesha said in her statement, referring to the alleged night of the attack on her. «As I’ve always said, I can’t remember everything that happened. I look forward to closing this chapter of my life and starting anew. I wish peace to all parties involved in this».
Dr. Luke continued to deny the singer’s allegations in his statement, saying, «While I appreciate Kesha acknowledging again that she can’t remember what happened that night in 2005, I am absolutely certain that nothing happened. I never drugged her or assaulted her, and I would never do that to anyone. For the sake of my family, I fought to clear my name for almost 10 years. It’s time for me to put an end to this difficult issue and move on. I wish Kesha all the best».
In December 2023, Kesha officially left Dr. Luke’s label, Kemosabe Records, after releasing her album «Gag Order», - which she was obligated to release with his label under contract.
