Ketanji Brown Jackson holds a very important place as the first African American woman ever to serve on the Supreme Court. She was appointed by President Joe Biden to fill the vacancy left by former Justice Stephen Breyer’s retirement. She was sworn in as a judge in June 2022, after being confirmed by the Senate in April of the same year.
When Ketanji delivered her opening statement at her Supreme Court confirmation hearings, her husband Dr. Patrick Jackson was by her side. As his wife gave a moving speech about why she is qualified for the country’s highest court, her husband was seen crying as he watched her. Ketanji was officially appointed to the Supreme Court on September 30, 2022, during the traditional investiture ceremony. It was the first time a lawyer took her seat on the bench, solidifying her place as the first African American judge on the court. Of course, Patrick was by her side, holding her hand and kissing her after the historic event. As his wife introduced him, Patrick has been working as a surgeon for over two decades. He practices medicine in Washington at MedStar Georgetown Hospital. His areas of specialization include abdominal wall reconstruction, cholecystectomy, and more. He graduated from Columbia University Medical School in 1995 and completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Ketanji and Patrick got married in 1996, but they met when they were both students at Harvard, through the Miami Herald. While Patrick was completing his medical residencies and internships, Ketanji moved to Boston with him, where their first daughter was born, as she shared in a lecture in March 2017.
With the couple’s emotional moment during Ketanji’s opening, it’s no wonder they seem like the perfect pair! Ketanji spoke about the unusual couple during the lecture, calling her husband a «quintessential 'Boston Brahmin'» before mentioning how different their childhoods were. «He and his twin brother, in fact, are the sixth generation in their family to graduate from Harvard College. In contrast, I’m only the second generation in my family to go to any college, and I’m pretty sure if you traced my lineage back through my grandmothers — who, by the way, grew up in Georgia — you would find that my ancestors were slaves on both sides», - she said.
