Trust Katy Perry to bring some of the most unique fashion trends to American Idol. However, her latest style led to an almost catastrophic wardrobe malfunction in the middle of the show. According to a video on Instagram that the 39-year-old singer posted on Monday, April 15, her silver, pointed chrome top «broke» and almost slipped off her as she sat at the judges' table.

«My top broke», - captioned the video performer of «Wide Awake». In the video, a visibly tense Katy declared, «I need my top to stay in place!» while crew members and Luke Bryan tried to fix her unique top with tools. «If it’s not fixed, this show will get more than it bargained for», - she added.

Although Luke tried to help, he quickly gave up as the top was a complex fashion element to handle. Later in the video, Katy reacted to contestant Roman Collins' performance of James Brown’s song «It's A Man’s Man’s Man’s World».

«This song broke my top. Looks like it’s a man’s world», - Katy joked. She then hid under the table and covered her chest with a pillow, adding, «It's a family show».

After the almost revealing incident, Katy spoke with Entertainment Tonight, clarifying that she did not consider it a wardrobe malfunction.

«It wasn’t a real malfunction. It was just a TV moment», - said the singer of «California Gurls». «Every season, it seems like I rip my pants. I think it’s physical comedy, physical expression in me that just wants to burst».

Katy was referring to the viral moment when her pants ripped on air in 2022. She was performing her hit «Teenage Dream» in front of American Idol contestants when the back of her red leather pants suddenly tore.

Adding to the humor of the latest moment, Lionel Richie playfully accused Luke of breaking Katy’s top.

«Luke knocked the top off, I’ll tell you the truth», - Lionel told ET. «And then Luke spent the rest of the time apologizing, apologizing. But he was definitely apologizing, and then trying to put it back together, and it looked worse than all of this».

Luke, however, claimed he was just trying to help his colleague when he attempted to fix the chrome top with pliers.

«At this point in the game, I’m just asking, 'What do you need? What do you need? Do you need pliers? Do you need a towel? A robe? What do you need?'» Luke said
