Catherine O’Hara: Life, Family, and Legacy of the Actress
30 january 2026 в 23:37
One of Catherine O’Hara’s most significant roles is that of Kevin McCallister’s mother in the first two «Home Alone» films. Recently, she played Moira Rose in the popular series «Schitt's Creek», - where she was also the mother of two children. «It's great to play a fulfilled mother because it’s one of the most important roles in life», - she said in a 2020 interview with Variety about her role as Moira.
Like in her statement, Catherine was a mother in real life as well. She has two sons, Matthew and Luke, with her husband Bo Welch, with whom she has been married for 30 years. An interesting fact: Bo and Catherine met on the set of the film «Beetlejuice» in 1988.
Unfortunately, Catherine passed away at the age of 71 on January 30, 2026. Learn about her two children below.
Matthew Welch, Catherine and Bo’s eldest son, was born in 1994. Matthew has managed to largely avoid media attention throughout his life, so not much is known about him. However, he seems to have inherited his mother’s creativity, as he worked on the set of «Schitt's Creek» alongside his brother for an unspecified period, as Catherine mentioned in a conversation with Vanity Fair in May 2020. One of them worked as a set decorator, while the other helped with building the sets.
Although her children worked on her set, Catherine apparently couldn’t spend much time with them. In fact, she admitted that she envied Moira for seeing her children so often. «I always think, where are my kids?» she said in a March 2019 interview with Time. The Golden Globe winner was always a working mother, and some of her most famous films made while raising her children include «Waiting for Guffman» (1996), «Best in Show» (2000), «For Your Consideration» (2006), and «Penelope» (2006).
Catherine gave birth to Luke Welch in 1997, and he is the second and youngest child in the family. Like his brother, he is a very private person and does not have any known public profiles on social media.
Fans know that Luke and Matthew are very funny together, which Catherine confirmed in an interview with The Toronto Star in 2007. «They are very funny, and we encourage that», - she noted. «The older one does routines with Warner cartoons—really old-fashioned, cheap, funny vaudeville stuff. And the younger one is into wordplay. I’m proud that we all make each other laugh»
