Kate Middleton is currently on a «summer break» and will refrain from public events for some time, royal sources report.
The Princess of Wales, a 42-year-old woman who is still undergoing treatment for cancer, received a standing ovation when she attended the final of the men’s singles tournament at Wimbledon on July 14 — it was only her second public appearance this year.
On March 22, Kate announced that she had been diagnosed with an unspecified type of cancer and had stepped back from her previous royal duties.
Initially, it was unclear whether Middleton would attend the tournament, considering her ongoing cancer treatment and only one other public appearance at the Trooping the Colour in early June. As a patron of the English London Tennis and Croquet Club, her appearance was eagerly anticipated by fans.
She exceeded expectations, appearing in a stunning purple dress and sitting front and center in the Royal Box at Wimbledon for almost three hours. Princess Kate sat next to her 9-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, and her sister, Pippa Middleton.
Photographer Carway Tang, who captured the queen’s entrance, said the moment became even more special as Charlotte beamed with pride for her mom.
«Wimbledon eagerly awaited her return, and she returned», - he added.
This appearance of the mother of three and her visible message of optimism showed how much she enjoyed attending the event, despite the difficult changes in her life.
«It gave her support. She went through something terrible and stressful, and it’s important to have small victories to hope for or that give you the strength and energy to move forward», - said a palace source. «And that’s what it was».
Robert Jobson, author of the new book «Catherine, Princess of Wales: Biography of the Future Queen», - coming out on August 6, told PEOPLE exclusively this week: «She will return, but when you have had such an experience, it changes your perspective and the order of things», - he said.
Now that her children have finished school, royal sources told Vanity Fair that Middleton and Prince William plan to remain «under the radar» at their home in Norfolk while she continues with preventative chemotherapy.
«She won’t have to be in the spotlight», - said a palace source to PEOPLE. «Being with family and just being herself will give her energy. There will be plenty of time to focus on her recovery»
