Swimmer Katie Ledecky and rower Nick Mead, two of the gold medal winners for Team USA, were named flag bearers for Team USA at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games on Sunday, August 11.

The news was announced on Thursday, August 8, by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC). The event will include the passing of the relay of the Summer Games from Paris to Los Angeles, the host city of the 2028 Olympics.

The four-time Olympic champion is the most decorated American woman in any sport at the Olympics and the most decorated female swimmer of all time, with a total of 14 medals.

The 27-year-old swimmer, deserving of this honor, learned the news from her teammate Bobby Finke. «I really can’t think of anyone better than you to lead us out of these Olympic Games», - Ledecky said during a video call. She was visibly emotional, reacting with an «oh» before tearing up.

«You're making me cry», - Ledecky replied.

«It's a huge honor», - she added. «I can’t wait for the closing ceremony. It was an honor to represent our country here in Paris, and I am very proud to be part of this team».

Ledecky did not attend the opening ceremony on July 26, where the flag bearers for Team USA were LeBron James and Coco Gauff, due to her competition schedule starting the next day. She will be joined by Mead, a 29-year-old two-time Olympian who earned his first medal as part of the gold-winning Team USA in the men’s four — the first American gold in this event since 1960.

In a statement provided by Team USA, Mead emphasized what an «incredible honor» it is to be a flag bearer, noting that no rower has ever been chosen for this role.

«Sharing this privilege with Katie makes it even more special», - Mead said. «My experience at the Paris Games was a lifelong dream, and I am filled with immense pride, gratitude, and joy. I also want to thank the city of Paris and the entire country of France for hosting incredible games. I will cherish these memories forever».

The closing ceremony, scheduled for 3:00 PM Eastern Time on Sunday, will take place at the Stade de France, which served as the venue for many events during these games, including athletics
