CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins seemingly responded to attacks from President Donald Trump by displaying a mug with the phrase «America needs angry women» on her desk during the October 2 broadcast of The Source With Kaitlan Collins.
While Collins did not specifically comment on the accessory, Trump has made derogatory remarks about the journalist multiple times in recent months. In an interview with TIME published on October 1, he described Collins as «very average» and «the most miserable young woman I’ve ever seen».
Earlier, on September 22, at a United Nations General Assembly event, Trump expressed his displeasure at Collins’s presence, stating, «I'm surprised CNN is covering me here. You shouldn’t be here!» He also announced a ban on CNN and other news outlets from entering the White House, which legal experts believe is illegal. Later, a federal judge ordered Trump to restore journalists' access to the White House, citing a violation of the First Amendment.
In a post on TruthSocial after the UN event, Trump again criticized Collins and other members of the press, calling her a «third-rate reporter» and «a really miserable person». In July, he also criticized her appearance, comparing her to transgender actress Dylan Mulvaney and advising her to «smile more».
Despite the president’s attacks, Collins emphasizes that she wants to focus on her work rather than on reactions to Trump’s comments. She noted, «It's important to bring the focus back to the work, to the questions, and to the non-answers that we get».
