Sutherland is scheduled to appear in court on the charges on February 2, 2026.

The actor was arrested for allegedly physically assaulting a taxi driver, who did not sustain serious injuries as a result of the incident, police reported.

In an email from Los Angeles Police Officer Kevin Terza, according to NBC News, Sutherland «entered the taxi, physically assaulted the driver (the victim), and made criminal threats against the victim» just after midnight Pacific Time on January 12.

Sutherland has been arrested at least four times in his life. His first notable arrest occurred in 1989 when he was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), according to People. He pleaded guilty to reckless driving while intoxicated.

The «Designated Survivor» actor was arrested again in 1993 for DUI. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 200 hours of community service in exchange for 12 days in jail.

In the early 2000s, Sutherland was arrested again for DUI and received five years of probation, according to TV Insider. In 2007, the actor violated the terms of his probation when he was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Sutherland was sentenced to 48 days in jail, paid a fine, and entered an alcohol treatment program.

Following that arrest, Sutherland apologized in a statement obtained by the Daily Mail at the time. It read: «I am very sorry for the disappointment and concern this has caused my family, friends, and colleagues on '24' and 20th Century Fox. I appreciate the support and care I have received in recent weeks both personally and professionally».

Two years later, Sutherland was accused of assaulting designer Jack McCullough at the Mercer Hotel in Soho, New York, after a charity event for the Metropolitan Museum. According to The New York Times, a warrant for Sutherland’s arrest was not issued, but he turned himself in to the police in 2009. The charges against him were dropped after he issued an apology.

In 2017, Sutherland failed a sobriety test after making an illegal U-turn and was arrested by the Los Angeles police. He was released on bail set at $ 25,000.
