The NFL spoke out after Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker made controversial remarks at a graduation ceremony at Benedictine College over the weekend. Senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer Jonathan Beane issued a statement condemning the comments made by the 28-year-old Harrison, which sparked criticism.

The Chiefs kicker faced backlash for various comments made during his speech, reflecting his conservative Catholic ideology. During his speech, Harrison spoke out against «dangerous gender ideologies», - seemingly referring to the upcoming Pride Month starting in June.

At another point in his speech, Harrison addressed the women in the audience and urged them to embrace the role of «homemakers», - which also caused outrage. «I think you women have been told the most diabolical lies», - he said, according to Entertainment Tonight. «Some of you may succeed in the world, but I think most of you are happiest in your marriage and the children you bring into this world. I can say that my beautiful wife Isabel would be the first to say that her life truly began when she started living out her calling as a wife and mother».

In another part of the interview, Harrison criticized President Joe Biden for his policies and spoke out against abortions, IVF, surrogacy, etc. At another point in his speech, he also quoted Taylor Swift’s song «Bijouterie», - making a reference to his teammate Travis Kelce.

In a statement, an NFL executive clarified that the league does not share the same values as the kicker. «Harrison Butker spoke in his personal capacity», - he told Entertainment Tonight. «His views are not the views of the NFL as an organization. The NFL firmly stands by our commitment to inclusivity, which makes our league stronger».

The NFL was not the only organization to speak out after the kicker’s speech. Former chair of the Kansas City LGBT Commission Justis Horn also spoke out against Harrison on X (formerly Twitter). «Harrison Butker does not represent Kansas City and never has. Kansas City has always been a place that welcomes, affirms, and accepts our LGBT+ members», - he wrote
