Kim Cattrall kindly denied rumors of her return to the «Sex and the City» franchise in one sentence.
«Oh, that’s so sweet, but I won’t be returning», - she said on Sunday, July 21, in response to the Elle headline that read: «Looks like Samantha Jones will return in the third season of 'And Just Like That…'»
Rumors had been circulating that Cattrall, 67, would return for a revival of the series that follows the SATC heroines — Carrie, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Charlotte, played by Kristin Davis, and Miranda, played by Cynthia Nixon — as they navigate life and love in New York City in their 50s.
Cattrall played the sexually liberated publicist Samantha Jones in the original HBO show for six seasons from 1998 to 2004, as well as in the movie adaptations released in theaters in 2008 and 2010.
After the 2010 film «Sex and the City 2», - Cattrall declined to appear in a third film and was not asked to return for «And Just Like That». However, she surprised fans by making a brief cameo as Samantha at the end of the show’s second season last year. When news of her cameo in the second season became known, Cattrall explained that she had no plans to return to the role of Samantha on a larger scale.
However, she added: «I don’t think I’ll ever say goodbye to Samantha. Like many other characters I’ve played over the years, I’m very emotionally attached and protective of my characters. She has given me so much, and I am very grateful to her».
The actress had previously spoken about not wanting to be part of a new show, telling Variety in May 2022 that she did not like how her character was portrayed in the script for a never-made third film. She called this portrayal «heartbreaking» and said it put her off reprising the role of Samantha.
Cattrall also spoke about the difficulties of playing the character over several decades, as the first season of «Sex and the City» aired in 1998.
«Everything has to grow, or it dies. I felt that when the series ended, I thought it was smart. We’re not repeating ourselves», - she told the publication. «And then a movie, to tie up loose ends. And then another movie. And then another movie?»
In real life, Cattrall, who was born in Liverpool, England, and raised in British Columbia, does not sound or move like Samantha. A self-proclaimed serial monogamist, she recently celebrated a six-year anniversary with her partner, Russell Thomas, 53
