Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg are awkward mismatched Jewish American cousins who make a pilgrimage to Poland to honor the memory of their late grandmother in the highly acclaimed black comedy «The Pain of Real». And according to Jesse, who wrote and directed the film, he did not intend to make any scenes particularly emotional. «Funny, because people tell me they cry while watching the movie, and my question is always to them — when?» — said the star of «The Social Network» in an interview for Deadline in December 2024. «Because I didn’t direct any of the scenes as crying scenes. I hear different answers… [but] I’m always surprised by this».
«The Pain of Real» won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024, as well as received four Golden Globe nominations, three Critics Choice nominations, and two Oscar nominations. Kieran won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor on January 5.
If you haven’t seen this film yet, here’s how you can watch it.
Jesse plays David, and Kieran plays his cousin Benji. The duo travels to Poland to honor the memory of their late grandmother, but their incompatible personalities cause tension, as do old family grievances that surface during their difficult journey. In his December interview, Jesse explained that much of the content was taken from his own life. «With this film, I felt that there was enough material there that could not only reflect my very specific personal life, but also be entertaining, funny, interesting, provocative, and cinematic…» — said Jesse to Deadline. «I thought it could be a good movie, but I always write from a place of personal thoughts».
«The Pain of Real» is available for purchase or rental on all platforms. It can also be watched on Hulu with a subscription. You can also buy a physical copy of the film — the Blu-ray will be available on February 4, and can be pre-ordered through Amazon Prime.
Yes! «The Pain of Real» received a couple of prestigious nominations for the biggest ceremony in Hollywood, which will take place on March 2. Kieran was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and Jesse received a nomination for Original Screenplay
