Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a significant federal holiday in the United States dedicated to the life and legacy of the civil rights leader who advocated for equality, justice, and nonviolent protests. In 2025, Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be observed on Monday, January 20th.

The holiday is observed on the third Monday of each January in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which was signed into law by former President Lyndon Johnson in 1968.

Although the day is dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, it does not always fall on his actual birth date of January 15th due to the provisions of the act. King was born in 1929, and the holiday is observed on the nearest Monday to his birthday each year.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day was officially established as a federal holiday on January 20, 1983. Former President Ronald Reagan signed the legislation after a decade-long campaign led by civil rights activists, supporters of King, and lawmakers. The movement to create a holiday in honor of Dr. King began just days after his assassination on April 4, 1968.

Although the holiday was established by law in 1983, it was not fully observed nationwide until January 20, 1986. Initially, some states resisted recognizing the holiday or chose to observe it under different names. However, by the mid-2000s, all 50 states officially adopted Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

In addition to honoring Dr. King’s legacy, MLK Day has been declared a national day of service. According to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, Americans are encouraged to voluntarily participate in public efforts to continue King’s work in promoting equality and justice
