Collin Gosselin has published a memoir titled «In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood», - in which he discusses his upbringing on a reality show and his complicated relationship with his mother, Kate Gosselin. The book was recently released and contains numerous revelations about his life.
Collin became known through the show «Jon & Kate Plus 8», - which aired from April 2007 to July 2017 and documented his family’s life. After his parents' divorce in 2009, the program was renamed «Kate Plus 8» and continued to follow Kate’s life as a single mother. In his memoir, Collin claims that his mother sent him to the Fairmount Behavioral Health System psychiatric hospital in Philadelphia when he was 12 years old, and that during the 22 months he spent there, he received only one visit from Kate. He suggests that she did this to prevent him from potentially speaking out about her alleged abuse. Kate has denied these accusations, stating that Collin suffered from behavioral issues.
In response to Collin’s statements, Kate Gosselin noted that he had received several psychiatric diagnoses and that he was placed in the facility on the recommendation of specialists. She added that all measures taken in their family were aimed at protecting all family members.
After leaving the hospital, Collin moved in with his father, who gained sole custody of him. In his memoir, he also claims that Kate isolated him from his siblings, kept him locked in the basement, and forced him to take numerous medications.
In the book, Collin shares details about how his mother wielded her power during filming and claims that TLC offered his parents $ 2 million to «continue to pretend that their marriage was intact» in front of viewers. He also describes instances of abuse, including allegations that Kate hit him and used a plastic spoon for punishment.
Collin also asserts that his father was unaware that he had been sent to the facility until a year and a half later, and that he was only able to contact him through a note passed by his roommate. In the book, he also mentions suspicions that Kate may have been unfaithful to her husband with her former bodyguard, with whom she began dating in 2025.
Us Weekly reached out for comments from Kate, TLC, and other individuals mentioned in the book.
