As part of NASA’s historic Artemis II mission, which marks the return to crewed flights to the Moon, Commander Reid Wiseman leads this iconic journey around the Moon. An experienced astronaut and former U.S. Navy pilot, he has spent many years preparing for this mission while also raising a family. Wiseman is the father of two daughters, whom he is raising with his late wife, Carroll Taylor Wiseman, who passed away in 2020 after a battle with cancer.

During the record lunar flyby, Wiseman’s crew members paid tribute to his wife by suggesting that a recently discovered crater be named «Carroll». Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen said, «A few years ago, we started this journey in our close-knit family of astronauts, and we lost a loved one… Her name was Carroll», - as the crew collectively marked the moment.

Wiseman is a NASA astronaut and former U.S. Navy pilot serving as the commander of the Artemis II mission—the first crewed flight around the Moon in over 50 years. In 2014, he spent several months aboard the International Space Station and held leadership positions in NASA’s astronaut office.

Wiseman has two daughters—Ellie and Katherine.

Wiseman posted on Instagram that one of his daughters secretly packed cookies in his luggage. «When you’re going to the Moon and you find out your daughter secretly packed cookies she baked into your luggage. My heart can’t take it! ❤️❤️❤️», - he wrote in the caption.

Wiseman’s wife, Carroll Taylor Wiseman, passed away in May 2020 at the age of 46 after a five-year battle with cancer. The couple had been married since 2003 and raised two daughters together.

Carroll dedicated her career to helping others, working as a registered nurse in a neonatal intensive care unit, according to NASA. According to the Baltimore Banner, during her illness, Wiseman temporarily stepped away from active flight duty and took on leadership roles in NASA’s astronaut office, first as a deputy and then as chief. After her death, Wiseman became the sole parent to his daughters. He returned to flying in November 2022 and was later selected to command Artemis II
