Tennessee Department of Corrections Commissioner Frank Strada has resigned following a botched execution of inmate Krista Pike. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee confirmed the announcement on Saturday, October 3, stating that Strada will leave his position at the end of the month and expressing gratitude for his efforts to ensure a smooth transition to new leadership.
Strada, who was appointed by the governor in 2023, emphasized in his statement that the department acted in accordance with established protocols. He added that he believes his resignation is the best decision in the interest of an external investigation. Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed on September 30, but two lethal injections administered did not result in her death. Witnesses reported hearing Pike snoring and complaining of pain during the execution. She was later taken to a local hospital, and her attorneys filed a motion to stay the execution.
Pike’s attorneys claim that she remains in critical condition and is on a ventilator after sustaining injuries to both arms during the execution attempt. In their emergency statement, they noted that as of October 1, Pike was intubated and in an unconscious state.
While Pike’s attorneys called Strada’s resignation «justified», - they also pointed out that it will not help Krista herself. They stressed that the incident represents a systemic failure that goes beyond one individual and expressed hope that an independent investigation will reveal serious issues within Tennessee’s death penalty system. Earlier, Governor Lee and the Tennessee Department of Corrections stated that the execution attempt adhered to protocols.
