The summer of 2025 became a nightmare for the leading late-night TV shows. CBS made the shocking decision to cancel «The Late Show with Stephen Colbert». Then it was ABC; they suspended Jimmy Kimmel’s show due to a comment related to «MAGA» by Charlie Kirk. With fictional series like Hacks on HBO putting pressure on the world of late-night comedy shows, viewers are wondering if the long-standing pillar is really dying. With streaming shows and social media becoming the norm, cable networks may be tightening their wallets.

CBS announced in July 2025 that «The Late Show with Stephen Colbert» would end in May 2026. Network executives cited finances as the reason for the cancellation.

«We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will close The Late Show franchise in May 2026», - CBS said. «We are proud that Stephen called CBS his home. He and the show will be remembered in the pantheon of greats who graced late-night television. This is purely a financial decision against the backdrop of a challenging late-night show environment. It is not related to the show’s performance, content, or any other events happening at Paramount».

Two months later, Colbert and his staff received an Emmy award for best talk show.

An ABC representative revealed in a brief statement that «Jimmy Kimmel Live!» would be «suspended indefinitely». The announcement came shortly after the comedian said, «The MAGA gang is desperately trying to portray this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as someone else, not one of them, and doing everything possible to score political points. There was grief between mutual accusations».

In response to Kimmel’s comment, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr criticized Kimmel on the Benny Johnson show and threatened to «do it the easy way or the hard way», - according to multiple sources.

Nexstar, an ABC-affiliated station, stated that it would not broadcast Kimmel’s show in the «foreseeable future», - adding that it «strongly objects to Mr. Kimmel’s recent comments about the murder of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programs on its ABC-affiliated markets».

Jimmy Fallon’s late-night show has not faced any outstanding issues from NBC. However, Donald Trump called for its cancellation, as well as other comedians.

Seth Meyers has not had any open problems with his network, NBC.

Taylor Tomlinson’s show on CBS ended after two seasons in June 2025. Tomlinson decided to resume her career as a stand-up comedian after leaving the show by her own choice.

Bill Maher on HBO has not publicly stated that his show is facing imminent cancellation.

Andy Cohen did not point to any impending issues with his network, Bravo, an NBCU network.

John Oliver is still on the air with his network, HBO.
