Actress Constance Zimmer shared her story of battling breast cancer, announcing her diagnosis in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On her Instagram, she revealed that she was diagnosed in March of this year while she was away from home.
Zimmer reported that on March 13, her doctor informed her via video call: «You have DCIS, also known as stage 0 breast cancer». She noted that this news was a shock to her. The first thing the actress did was call her husband, and then she returned home to tell her daughter.
According to Zimmer, the psychological pressure that followed the diagnosis was overwhelming. She began consulting with a number of doctors, many of whom recommended removing the tumor as soon as possible, suggesting a mastectomy. However, the actress pondered, «What if I don’t want that? What if I want to keep my breast?»
A meeting with Dr. Kristi Funk changed the situation. She suggested trying a lumpectomy and assured Zimmer that she would be able to remove the tumor. The actress noted that this was the first doctor who considered her wishes, which brought her to tears of joy.
After three surgeries over three weeks, Constance reported that her breast was saved and looked good. She underwent treatment while on a public press tour for the film «Love Story», - keeping her diagnosis and treatment a secret.
Zimmer also mentioned that after the surgeries, she underwent a course of radiation and received an Emmy nomination. She expressed gratitude for being cancer-free now and thanked photographer Katherine White for capturing her after the diagnosis.
The actress urged women not to wait for symptoms to appear and to get screened. She plans to discuss more details about her story, including comments from her surgeon, on her podcast «Talk Fifty to Me» on October 6.
