The joke in the new action movie «Ambush» starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt has caused outrage. Before the film’s release in theaters on Friday, May 3, some viewers are unhappy with a joke that referenced the past relationship between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. The scene that sparked controversy involves the character of Hannah Waddingham, a producer on set, entering a messy trailer.
«It's as if Amber and Johnny were just here», - she says. The joke seemed to allude to the allegations of domestic violence and abuse that Amber, 38, and Johnny, 60, had made against each other. The former spouses were married from 2015 to 2017.
Viewers are discussing the controversial joke on social media. One Twitter user wrote: «Ambush made a tasteless 'joke' about the domestic violence Amber endured at the hands of Johnny. It’s 2024, why are we including such lines in movies? Disgusting work [sic]».
Another person added: «Domestic violence is not a joke. Everyone involved in @TheFallGuyMovie should be ashamed. How many people knew about this and did nothing? You are all sick».
Amber and Johnny were involved in a lengthy legal battle after the «Aquaman» actress wrote an article for The Washington Post about domestic violence. Although she did not name the «Pirates of the Caribbean» star in the article, Johnny sued Amber for defamation. Both actors made shocking accusations against each other during the widely publicized trial in 2022. In the end, Johnny was awarded millions of dollars.
«Ambush» is mainly based on the 80s TV series of the same name. The film follows Ryan’s character, Colt Seavers, a stuntman who suffers a career-ending injury. He breaks up with his girlfriend, Jody Moreno (played by Emily), and leaves the stuntman life behind. A year later, Colt finds himself back on set after a movie star disappears. Now he must find the actor and win back his ex-girlfriend.
The film starring Ryan and Emily also highlights the work of stunt performers. None of the actors or crew members have publicly responded to the outrage over the joke about Amber and Johnny.
