Cornell University commented on the allegations of gang rape made against members of the Chi Phi fraternity. This was stated by university president Michael Kotlikoff and vice president for public relations Kyle Kimball after a former student filed a lawsuit on September 16, 2026, claiming that she was drugged and raped by seven fraternity members on October 19, 2024.
In a video address on October 3, 2026, Kotlikoff called the incident «deeply troubling» and acknowledged that it raises important questions about sexual violence and party culture. He promised that the university would continue to work on improving the situation and would not leave this event unaddressed.
Kimball, for his part, defended the university’s initial investigation into the case, noting that it was conducted in accordance with federal law and included temporary suspensions and other measures. He also emphasized that the fraternity was immediately suspended after the victim filed a complaint in November 2024.
Kotlikoff also reported the initiation of an independent investigation to assess the university’s response to the allegations. He supported the appointment of special prosecutor Letitia James to re-investigate the case.
The victim, known by the pseudonym Jane Doe, claims that the incident occurred at the fraternity when she was 20 years old. She reported the abuse three weeks after the incident and left the university. Her attorney noted that she is undergoing extensive treatment and has temporarily suspended her education.
