King Charles III personally wrote to former President Donald Trump after the alleged assassination attempt, Buckingham Palace confirmed.
The letter was delivered on Sunday, July 14, through the British Embassy in Washington, but the palace refused to provide details about its contents. According to the BBC, the sentiments expressed coincide with those expressed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer over the weekend.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, 61, expressed his outrage on Saturday at the «shocking scenes at President Trump’s rally» and wished Trump and the victims a speedy recovery.
«Political violence of any kind has no place in our societies, and my thoughts are with the victims of this attack», - Starmer wrote in a message on X.
The former president, 78, was left with a bloody ear after «multiple shots» were fired in his direction at a rally in Pennsylvania. He confirmed on his Truth Social platform that a bullet «pierced» his ear before Secret Service agents dragged him to the ground.
One person at the rally, former fire chief Cory Comperatore, was killed, and two other spectators are in critical condition, authorities said.
The shooter, 20-year-old nursing home employee and registered Republican Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by the Secret Service.
He also told The Washington Examiner that if he hadn’t turned his head away from the crowd to look at a screen showing data he was using in his speech, «we wouldn’t be talking today».
The 75-year-old king is expected to strictly adhere to political neutrality, so the contents of the personal letter were not disclosed. However, Charles and Donald have crossed paths on several occasions and reportedly developed «good working relationships» after Trump’s state visit to the UK in June 2019.
Trump first met the king and queen, and then the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, during a royal tour of the US in 2005.
Since then, Trump and his wife Melania have dined with the royal couple at the US Ambassador’s residence Winfield House in London. They have also met for tea at Clarence House at least twice
