King Charles III presented his post-coronation portrait a year after ascending to the throne. The 75-year-old monarch showed the painting to staff and photographers on Tuesday, May 14, at Buckingham Palace. His wife, Queen Camilla, was by his side at the unveiling of the portrait.
The painting depicts Charles in the middle of a red background. The king is dressed in the uniform of the Welsh Guards, and a butterfly flies over his shoulder in the portrait.
The royal family released a statement from the British artist who created the image: Jonathan Yeo.
«When I started this project, His Majesty the King was still His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, and, like the butterfly I painted hovering over his shoulder, this portrait evolved as the subject’s role in our public life transformed», - the statement read.
Charles was officially crowned king in May 2023 during the coronation ceremony. His sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, were present at this widely discussed event. During the ceremony, William, 41, knelt before his father and made an emotional statement in honor of the monarch.
Eight months after His Royal Highness became king, he was diagnosed with cancer. Buckingham Palace released a statement in February confirming this news.
«During a recent hospital procedure for a benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue was discovered. Subsequent diagnostic tests revealed a form of cancer», - the palace statement began. «His Majesty began regular treatment today, during which doctors have advised him to postpone public duties. Throughout this period, the King will continue to carry out state affairs and official duties as usual».
The palace also noted in its statement: «The King is grateful to his medical team for their prompt intervention, made possible by the recent hospital procedure. He remains fully positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duties as soon as possible. His Majesty has decided to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope that it may help the understanding of the public worldwide suffering from cancer».
Just a month later, Charles’s daughter-in-law, Princess Kate, revealed her cancer diagnosis to the world.
Despite his diagnosis, Charles has been seen at various public events in England. As for Kate, 42, she has informed the public that she is taking time for herself to undergo treatment
