Courtney Love did not hesitate to express her opinion about the current generation of the world’s most popular pop stars. The alt-rock icon, 59, did not hold back in letting people know how she feels about the music of Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Madonna, and Beyoncé. She simply is not a fan of them. The singer, who was married to Kurt Cobain, criticized each singer in an interview for The Standard, published on Saturday, April 13.
Considering that Courtney’s new show on BBC is called «Courtney Love Women», - she discussed some of the most famous women in the music industry. In 2024, it’s hard to be more popular than Taylor Swift, and despite many praising the singer of «All Too Well», - Courtney definitely is not a fan. «Taylor is not important. She may be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably Madonna right now, but she’s not interesting as an artist», - she said to The Standard.
Another woman who cannot be left out when talking about the biggest pop stars in the world is Beyoncé. While Courtney supports the idea of Cowboy Carter, she also made it clear that she does not like her music. «I like the idea of Beyoncé recording a country album because it’s about black women entering spaces previously only allowed for white women, although I don’t really like it. As a concept, I love it. I just don’t like her music», - she said.
Speaking of pop stars performing country songs, Courtney also criticized Lana Del Rey for covering a country classic, advising her to take some time off. «I haven’t liked Lana since she covered John Denver’s song, and I really think she should take a break for seven years. Before 'Take Me Home Country Roads,' I thought she was great», - she said, admitting she was a fan of her early work. «When I was recording my new album, I had to stop listening to her because she was influencing me too much».
As for Madonna, Courtney stated that she definitely is not a fan of hers, and even made a joke about one of Madonna’s most popular movies. «I don’t like her, and I don’t like her. I liked 'Desperately Seeking Susan,' but more for New York City than for her», - she said.
As for female performers that Courtney is a fan of, she mentioned punk icon Patti Smith, Nina Simone, alt-rock singer-songwriter PJ Harvey, jazz singer Julie London and Joni Mitchell, as well as Debbie Harry and Blondie
