Promising MLB player Cole Matthis announced the death of his mother, Jennifer, who passed away at the age of 53. He shared this on Instagram, posting photos with her.
«Two days ago, I had to say goodbye to one of the most beloved people», - the 23-year-old Matthis noted in the caption of the post published on October 10. He added that words cannot describe what she did for their family and emphasized that she was not only a mother but also «the best dog mom» who always knew how to lift spirits.
Cole’s father, Sammy Matthis, who is also a former minor league player, confirmed on Facebook that Jennifer died of cancer. He wrote that her battle with the illness had ended and that she passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 8. Sammy noted that they were supposed to celebrate 32 years of marriage in December.
Cole was selected in the second round of the 2024 MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs from the College of Charleston. In June, he was traded to the New York Mets in exchange for pitcher David Peterson. He is currently participating in the Arizona Fall League, where he hit his first home run of the season on October 11.
