Chris Colfer shared that he was once told, «Don't come out, no matter what you do, because it will ruin your career», - on The View program on Tuesday, June 4.

Just a few days after the start of Pride Month, this 34-year-old actor added, «I grew up in a very conservative town where being openly gay was dangerous. I remember when I got on the show, the role was written for me, but I didn’t know what my character would be».

The actor’s breakthrough role in the series «Once Upon a Time» — where he starred alongside Lea Michele, Amber Riley, as well as the late Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera — led him to fame. The role of Kurt Hummel embodied a path to self-discovery and identification with his own sexuality. «So, I opened the script, and when I read it for the first time, I saw that it was an openly gay character», - Chris said.

Before joining the show, the author of the book «Roswell Johnson» did not come out, although he felt that he «couldn't hide it». During the interview, Chris admitted, «They said, 'Don't worry, as long as you never address it, you will be rewarded in the end,'» the actor confessed.

Chris realized it was time to bring this news to light when he met a fan on a signing tour for the show. «I opened this [note from a young fan], and there was a note that said, 'Thank you,' and there was a little paper rainbow chain. At that moment, I realized I needed to come out», - shared the actor, whose character eventually fell in love with Blaine Anderson — played by Darren Criss — in the series. «At that time, I thought, if I am openly gay actor, I may never win a major award, and I may never get to play a superhero, but I believe that being a source of positivity and providing comfort to people is much more important».

Since the end of «Once Upon a Time», - the author has been working on other projects. «Roswell Johnson Saves the World» is one of Chris’s series, in which he has just released his twentieth book. The story, telling of the adventures of a young boy in space after being abducted by aliens, has become a «banned» book due to its inclusivity and the presence of LGBTQ+ characters and strong women. «It's never fun when people come to school board meetings with weapons and demand your books be removed from the shelves. But freedom of the press is very good — it’s a really unfortunate time we live in when books like mine, which are completely innocent, become the target of attacks simply because of who wrote them», - he shared with The View hosts
