Crystal Hefner has reached out to Jessica Biel, urging her to reconsider her role in the upcoming film about Hugh Hefner. In a message posted on Instagram on October 8, Crystal, Hefner’s former wife, wrote: «Please reconsider playing ‘the wife' of Hugh Hefner if this film intends to romanticize him or the Playboy world». She added that she herself experienced sexual, emotional, financial, and physical abuse during their relationship.
Crystal also noted that «many other women have come forward with allegations of rape, coercion, drug addiction, and exploitation», - mentioning «deeply troubling issues» that allegedly involve «minors». She expressed hope that everyone involved in the film would listen to the women who have gone through this before helping Hollywood bring it back to a nostalgic era.
Earlier this week, Variety reported that Biel was cast in the film Playmates as a fictional version of Hefner’s wife. The film, written and directed by Lorraine Nicholson, also stars Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Pullman, and Indiana Elle. Pullman will portray Hugh Hefner himself.
According to the official project description, the film tells the story of a thirteen-year-old girl (Elle) who meets a contender for Playmate of the Month (Depp), and the pair «form an unusual friendship and try to help each other get what they want most: a magazine cover and a boy».
Crystal Hefner became known in the late 2000s when she entered the world of Playboy. She was one of Hugh’s girlfriends and eventually became his primary partner. Crystal and Hugh married on New Year’s Eve in 2012 when she was 26 and he was 86. They remained married until his death in 2017 at the age of 91.
Several years after Hugh’s death, Crystal shared her experiences in Playboy in her 2024 memoir, «Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself». She claimed that her time in the mansion was «emotionally traumatic».
Earlier this year, Crystal filed a complaint against the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation, expressing concerns that his explicit albums could become public. She stated that she believes these albums may contain explicit images of women and potentially underage girls.
