Kristo Pike transferred to hospital after two failed executions
After two unsuccessful execution attempts, inmate Krista Pike surprised her legal team with her ongoing recovery. According to her attorneys Randy Spivey and Kelly Glisson, Pike «is conscious, speaking, and continues to receive critical medical care». They noted that her recovery is medically unprecedented, although the prognosis remains uncertain.

Krista Pike, 50, remains in the hospital in handcuffs and leg shackles after two injections of pentobarbital failed to kill her. The attorneys expressed gratitude to the first responders and the hospital’s medical team for their exceptional care of Pike and the assistance provided to her. They also thanked the thousands of people around the world who sent messages of prayers and support.

Pike made headlines after injections intended to be lethal were administered on September 30 in Tennessee as part of her execution for the murder of classmate Colleen Slemmer in 1995. When the injections did not work, Pike, who could have become the first woman executed in Tennessee in 200 years, was hospitalized and placed on a ventilator.

Slemmer’s mother, May Martinez, traveled from Florida to Nashville for the execution of her daughter’s killer. After the botched execution, she stated that she «broke down in tears» seeing Pike «lying on the table, talking, laughing, and lifting her head». Martinez believes the state owes her an apology.

In 1996, Pike was convicted of first-degree murder for the beating, torture, and murder of Slemmer in a remote area on the University of Tennessee campus. Governor Bill Lee has opened an investigation into the failed executions, calling the incident a «tragedy». He noted that «no one wanted this to happen» and promised that «people deserve better».
