Cuauhtemoc was the ship that collided with the Brooklyn Bridge. The ship first set sail in 1982 during a trip from Spain to Mexico. Prior to the recent collision, Cuauhtemoc was on a goodwill world tour. It departed from Acapulco on the coast of Mexico on April 4th of this year, according to a press release from the Mexican Ministry of the Navy.

The mission of Cuauhtemoc was to «exalt the maritime spirit, strengthen maritime education, and convey the message of the Mexican people», - according to a press release published by CNN.

On May 17th, the ship attempted to pass under the Brooklyn Bridge, but its masts were too high, and the ship collided with the lower part of the bridge.

The Brooklyn Bridge was closed for approximately 40 minutes in both directions. New York’s emergency alert system announced the closure of the bridge around 10:00 PM Eastern Time. Approximately 40 minutes later, the agency announced that the bridge was reopened.

Despite the collision with the ship, the bridge remained undamaged, and public services can continue to use it.

It is unclear what exactly led to the collision of Cuauhtemoc with the Brooklyn Bridge. Mayor Eric Adams stated that the ship «lost power», - and then collided with the bridge, but authorities initially stated that «technical issues» could have been the cause of the accident. The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation into the collision.

There were 277 passengers on board the training ship. As confirmed by Mayor Adams, two people died as a result of the collision. Both victims fell from one of the masts of Cuauhtemoc. A total of 22 people were injured as a result of the collision
