Former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes is currently serving a reduced sentence of 9 years (reduced from 11 years and 3 months) after pleading guilty to fraud and conspiracy in November 2022. Viewers got a glimpse of how the disgraced biotech entrepreneur ended up in prison through the series The Dropout. The Hulu miniseries, released in March 2022, stars Amanda Seyfried as Holmes, and Naveen Andrews as Ramesh «Sunny» Balwani, the man who co-founded the controversial blood testing startup with Holmes. While Holmes became the face of the scandal — her black turtleneck becoming as symbolic as Steve Jobs' - Balwani mostly remained in the shadows.

So, who is Sunny Balwani? Learn more about this man below.

As noted by The New York Times in November 2021, very little is known about Ramesh «Sunny» Balwani compared to the documentaries and podcast series based on Elizabeth’s story and her time at Theranos.

«Sunny Balwani is an outstanding individual», - said Balwani’s lawyer Jeff Coopersmith to ABC News. «He was born in Pakistan to a Hindu family, and eventually the family had to move to India because being a Hindu in predominantly Muslim Pakistan was very difficult. When he came to the United States, he literally kissed the ground and studied at the University of Texas, where he earned a degree in computer science. Everything he ever did in his life, he achieved through incredibly hard work. He was perhaps the hardest-working person I have ever met».

Before helping Holmes launch Theranos — a company that promised their machines could conduct standard blood tests with just a few drops from a finger, according to The Guardian — Balwani was already involved in the world of technology. He was a sales manager in Northern California for Microsoft, according to The New York Times. During the dot-com boom, he joined a startup called CommerceBid.com.

CommerceBid created platforms that pitted suppliers against each other to reduce costs. It was bought by Commerce One for $ 225 million. When the internet bubble burst, Balwani reportedly walked away with a profit of $ 40 million. After returning to academia, he became an executive at Theranos.

In June 2018, Holmes and Balwani were charged with federal fraud charges in a multimillion-dollar investor fraud scheme, according to CNN. Both pleaded not guilty. In January 2022, a jury found Holmes guilty on four of the eleven charges — one count of conspiracy to defraud investors and three counts of fraud against specific investors. She was acquitted on three counts of defrauding patients and one count of conspiracy. The jury could not reach a decision on three other charges.

Her sentencing was scheduled for September 2022 because Balwani had not yet stood trial for his involvement. He also faces two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and nine counts of wire fraud.

Balwani’s lawyer claimed his client is innocent because he did not make a penny during his time at Theranos.

«In more than 28 years of practicing law, as both a federal prosecutor and a defense attorney, I have never seen a case like this, where the government brings criminal charges against a defendant who did not receive any financial benefit and lost millions of his own money», - said Jeffrey Coopersmith to Vanity Fair. «Mr. Balwani did not commit any crimes. He did not deceive Theranos investors, who were among the most experienced in the world. He did not deceive consumers, but instead worked tirelessly to give them access to their own health information».

During her testimony, Holmes said she met Balwani the summer before entering Stanford, when she was 18 and he was nearly two decades older and married. They began a relationship that continued throughout the creation of Theranos. Holmes also accused Balwani of sexual violence and mistreatment
