For decades, the hosts and participants of Saturday Night Live have praised the creator and producer Lorne Michaels. Back in 1975, the then 30-year-old Lorne introduced the groundbreaking sketch show on NBC, and the rest is history. Now, as the television writer and producer has been working on the show for decades, viewers are wondering who will be able to replace Lorne when he retires.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight in January 2024, Lorne said that he had «of course» thought about his future retirement and who could take his place.

Over the years, SNL participants have expressed their gratitude to Lorne. Pete Davidson noted Lorne as a friend and mentor for many years, as he did in his 2022 note when leaving the show.

«I owe my life to Lorne Michaels and the entire SNL team. I am so grateful, and I wouldn’t be here without them», - the comedian said in his statement at the time.

Below, Hollywood Life reveals who could replace Lorne, and more about his career at SNL.

It is unclear when exactly Lorne plans to retire from SNL. During his interview with ET in 2024, the writer noted that SNL had planned its 50th anniversary special for February 2025, adding: «So, I will definitely be there and definitely be there until then. And then we’ll figure out what we’re going to do».

In 2024, Lorne agreed with ET’s Nischelle Turner when she noted that many think Tina Fey could replace him.

«It could easily be Tina Fey», - Lorne admitted, adding, «But there are a lot of people there right now who also, you know… Tina is great and handles everything very well. She is a very important person in my life».

Tina started working at SNL in the late 1990s as a writer. She occasionally appeared in sketches as an additional actor and became the show’s first female head writer. By 2000, Tina became a cast member and eventually appeared on screen with Jimmy Fallon on Weekend Update. In 2006, Tina left SNL to work on the comedy series 30 Rock.

Lorne worked as a producer on SNL from 1975 to 1980 before leaving the show for five years to work on other projects. Since 1985, he has been producing the series.
