Quarterback Matt Donovan from Mayville State University has given his family and friends reason for optimism after having his breathing tube removed during his ongoing hospitalization. Matt is in a medically induced coma following a serious collision in a game on September 19.
Matt’s father, Terry, reported via Facebook on September 29 that the surgery was successful and that Matt now has a tracheostomy, which he described as a «bridge» to a safer and more comfortable recovery. He noted that this will give Matt time to heal and the opportunity to breathe more independently.
Terry also recounted a moment when his wife, Tina, was in the room with Matt and asked him to blink. Although his eyes did not open, she noticed movement in his eyelashes. When Terry spoke to Matt over FaceTime, he responded to his request twice. The father expressed hope that this was Matt’s response, and such moments are very important for the family right now.
Following this interaction, Matt was sedated for a procedure, which also went successfully. Terry emphasized that while they see small reasons for hope, Matt is still in critical condition in the intensive care unit and is facing a serious brain injury.
Matt was hospitalized after a head injury in a game against Simpson University. A statement from Mayville State University indicated that upon his arrival in Fargo, he underwent more than two hours of brain surgery, during which parts of his skull were removed to relieve pressure. Simpson University also expressed support, stating that their entire community is praying for Matt’s swift recovery.
