Olympian Lamecha Girma was expecting a different outcome in the final of the 3000-meter steeplechase at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, after he fell heavily on the track.

The 23-year-old athlete was doing well in the race, trying to catch up to second place, but his attempts were interrupted when his right leg got stuck in the final lap, jumping over a barrier on the track. This incident led to the runner falling on his back and being carried off on a stretcher, allowing American Kenneth Rucks from the US team to take the silver.

The fall of this Ethiopian runner was quite scary, he was motionless and unconscious for several minutes, according to the International Olympic Committee, as reported by The Guardian. After the fall in the 3000-meter steeplechase, Lamecha Girma received immediate assistance from medical teams on site… «Our thoughts are with him, and we send him our best wishes for a speedy recovery. Paris 2024 is in close contact with the Ethiopian NOC to stay informed about his condition».

In a post published by Elite Running Team on Instagram, it was updated that «after a full medical examination overnight, it has been confirmed that @lamechagirmaa is not suffering from a serious head injury. He will undergo further examination to check his leg before being allowed to leave the hospital».

The IOC then intervened to share with The Guardian that he is already healing, «we understand that he is in good shape and recovering».

In addition to this unfortunate incident, Lamecha has a silver medal from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and a world record in the sport. In an interview with Citius Mag, according to SportsKeeda, he shared his victory, noting for the publication: «I told journalists that I would break the record, so I had to think about breaking the record all day. In a way, it added some pressure. But because I said it out loud, I knew I had to do it. Then, when I broke it, I was of course happy, but also relieved. Because I had talked so much about it, it was like a weight off my shoulders»
