For Laura Medeiros, producing has never been a backup option; it has always been her goal. Growing up in Porto Alegre, Brazil, she was a child who watched adult films, absorbing everything—from cinematography to acting performances—already understanding that her place in this world was not only in front of the screen but also behind it. Everywhere behind it.

This feeling led her to Los Angeles, where she earned a master’s degree in producing from the New York Film Academy and began a career that spans independent film, festival circuits, and high-profile interactive media projects. What sets her apart in an industry filled with talented producers is not just her resume; it’s the perspective she brings to her work.

Most producers work at a distance from the script. Laura does not. Her deep involvement in the development and writing process gives her the creative flexibility that directly impacts how she manages production. She understands story structure not as an outside observer but as someone who has lived within it. This means that when budget constraints force difficult decisions, she doesn’t just cut pages; she finds solutions that protect the most important elements of the film.

«Instead of simply asking the writer to cut five pages», - she explains, «I believe in collaborative work to find smart, purposeful solutions, whether it’s merging scenes, changing locations, or reallocating dialogue».

This philosophy is based on a simple conviction: budget constraints and creative integrity are not opposites. They are negotiations, and an experienced producer is one who navigates them. The ability to bridge the gap between what the story needs and what production can realistically support is rare, and it’s what makes Laura effective at every stage of a project.

This belief was tested early on. Her short film «Good Times / Bad Times», - which she wrote, directed, and produced, was made with a budget of just under $ 1,000. Instead of viewing limitations as obstacles, Laura built the entire creative structure around them. One location. One day of shooting. A minimal crew. Even the reduced dialogue in the script was a conscious response to a noisy neighbor in the apartment where filming took place. Every limitation became a design decision.

As a result, the film was screened at ten festivals around the world and received several award nominations, including participation in the Fantaspoa International Fantastic Film Festival in her hometown—a moment she does not take lightly. For a short film made on almost no budget, its success is proof of what she brings to every project: resourcefulness and intention can be just as significant as budget.

Since then, her work has significantly expanded beyond independent short films. Medeiros noted that her collaboration in the video game industry has allowed her to engage in projects that require a new level of creative flexibility. The cyclical, iterative nature of game production, so different from the linear structure of a feature film, has pushed her to develop a more adaptive creative process. This has broadened her understanding of narrative possibilities and introduced her to production processes that traditional film education rarely covers.

On the theatrical side, the project «Halloween Feast», - in which she was part of the producing team after its international festival showing, is now available on streaming platforms and Blu-ray! At the same time, her latest short film «The Killer» is actively going through the festival circuit, gathering selections and award nominations across the United States.

Her next project is a new feature film that is entering pre-production alongside two Brazilian filmmakers working in Los Angeles. The project addresses issues of minority representation in media and the pressures inherent in the beauty pageant industry, an ambitious theme that points to the direction Laura’s career is heading: towards stories where something real is at stake.

«It doesn’t matter the scale of the project», - she said
