Lyle Menendez denied parole: reasons and consequences
23 august 2025 в 07:13
Lyle Menendez was denied parole the day after his younger brother, Erik Menendez, received the same result. The brothers, who fatally wounded their parents, Kitty and Jose Menendez, in 1989, were initially sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. However, this changed earlier this year during a rehearing in May, when a judge made them eligible for parole. Supporters continue to stand by the Menendez brothers and advocate for their release, as many question why Lyle and Erik were denied a chance at freedom.
Find out why Lyle was denied parole and what this means for him and Erik below.
Like his younger brother, Lyle was denied parole. The commission informed Lyle that they rejected his parole opportunity because «there are still signs» that he poses a danger to society, parole board member Julie Garland stated during a hearing on Friday, August 22, according to various sources.
«We believe your remorse is sincere», - Julie continued. «In many ways, you appear to be a model prisoner. You have been a model prisoner in many ways, demonstrating potential for change. But despite all these outward positives, we see that you still struggle with antisocial personality traits, such as deceit, minimization, and rule violations that lie beneath this positive surface».
Julie ended by giving Lyle some hope. She advised him, «Never lose hope. … This denial is not … it’s not the end. It’s a way for you to spend some time demonstrating, practicing what you preach about yourself, about who you want to be».
Julie noted that Lyle’s «rule violation» behind bars was part of the reason for his denial — specifically, his illegal long-term use of a cell phone. Julie told Lyle that he lost the opportunity to visit his family due to the illegal possession of a phone in March 2024, to which he did not object. Instead, Lyle tried to justify his use of the cell phone, saying he was trying to stay in touch with his family and did not believe the phone was harmful to anyone.
Lyle also acknowledged that August 20 was the anniversary of his parents' murder, calling it a «devastating day for many in [his] family».
Parole board member Robert Barton informed Erik that he was denied parole due to multiple violations during his incarceration, including at least three altercations with other inmates, committing tax fraud in 2013, smoking marijuana and using materials to make wine, using a cell phone, allegedly having «excessive physical contact» with his wife, Tammi Menendez, and having art supplies in his cell.
«Contrary to the beliefs of your supporters, you have not been a model prisoner, and frankly, we find that a bit concerning», - Robert told Erik during his 10-hour hearing
