LeBron James makes it known that on the court he is simply a partner to his son Bronny, not a «dad».
In a teaser for the upcoming episode of The Shop podcast by Uninterrupted, the 39-year-old NBA veteran and Lakers star shared that when his 19-year-old rookie steps onto the court for the Los Angeles Lakers this season, calling him by his parental title will be strictly prohibited.
When asked, «What is your working relationship? Will he call you 'dad' during practice, in the locker room?» LeBron quickly responded, saying that they have already discussed how they will communicate with each other.
«No, he can’t. He can’t call me 'dad' at work. Once we leave the private space and the gates close, I can be 'dad' again — in the car, if we’re driving together, at home I can be 'dad'».
Instead, LeBron suggested alternative nicknames: «He should call me '2−3' or 'Bron' or 'Goat', if he wants; it’s up to him».
«For me, it’s easy, because I’ve called him 'Bronny' for so long», - LeBron continued. «It's not like I constantly said 'Son, son'. So for me, it’s easy. It will be an adaptation for him. But we can’t run on the court, and he’ll be shouting, 'Dad! Pass me the ball! Dad! I’m open! Dad, let’s go!' No, that can’t be done».
After the Lakers selected LeBron’s eldest son as their second pick in this year’s draft, the duo is set to make history as the first father-son pair to play together in a regular season game.
The father of three has long wanted to share the court with his son before retiring. In an interview with Craig Melvin that aired on the Today show on July 8, LeBron called Bronny signing with the Lakers «the greatest achievement in my life».
LeBron praised his son for doing «everything as an individual» and added, «There is no greater achievement that will surpass the moment when I am on the court with my son».
«This is the greatest thing that has ever happened», - LeBron concluded.
Bronny, who suffered a heart attack during a workout in July 2023, had a rough debut in the NBA Summer League, although his game improved over time. He averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 25 games last season at the University of Southern California, where he started just six games.
