Ryne Sandberg left his legacy in Major League Baseball. The late Hall of Famer and former second baseman for the Chicago Cubs passed away on July 28, 2025. He was only 65 years old. Sandberg’s family announced his death in a statement posted on his Instagram account.
«With heavy hearts, we announce that Ryne passed away this evening in the comfort of his home», - confirmed the Sandberg family. «Ryne was surrounded by his loving wife Margaret, their children, and grandchildren. We thank you for all the kind words, support, and love during this difficult time. Ryne will forever remain in our hearts».

Sandberg had been battling metastatic prostate cancer. He announced his diagnosis in January 2024 in a statement on Instagram.

Sandberg noted that he «began treatment and am surrounded by my loving wife Margaret, our incredibly supportive family, the best medical team, and our dear friends».
«We will continue to be positive, strong, and fight to beat this», - concluded the former Phillies manager. «Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time for me and my family».
However, shortly after, Sandberg announced that he was cancer-free — a status that did not last long. In December 2024, he announced that the cancer had returned and spread to other organs.
