Black Sabbath are recognized as pioneers in the metal movement. Now they are ready to hang up their guitars and take their place in the pantheon of rock history with a final concert. For the first time in almost twenty years, legendary frontman Ozzy Osbourne will take the stage alongside bassist Geezer Butler, drummer Bill Ward, and guitarist Tony Iommi.
«It's my time to go 'Back to the Beginning'… time for me to pay homage to where I was born», - — said Ozzy in a statement published in Billboard. «How blessed I am to do this with the people I love. Birmingham is the true home of metal. Birmingham forever». Music director Tom Morello added in a statement via Instagram: «This will be the greatest heavy metal show».
By the way, the term «heavy metal» did not originate from Black Sabbath. «We called it heavy rock», - — said Tony in a 2017 interview with BBC News. «The term 'heavy metal' came from a journalist when I returned from America (in the 1970s). He said 'you play heavy metal' and I said 'no, it’s heavy rock — what is that?'»
Below are the details of the group’s final concert this summer.
The all-day event will take place on July 5, 2025 at Villa Park Stadium in Birmingham, England — the band’s hometown.
The farewell celebration will be a festival of some of the most iconic metal bands. In addition to Black Sabbath, fans will see performances by Metallica, Alice in Chains, Anthrax, Mastodon, Slayer, Gojira, Pantera, Lamb of God, and Halestorm. Artists including Billy Corgan, Slash, Tom Morello, Wolfgang Van Halen, Sammy Hagar, Fred Durst, Jake E. Lee, and others will also join the lineup. And this is just the beginning — according to the band’s announcement on Instagram, «more names will be announced soon».
Ticket sales will begin at 10:00 Greenwich Mean Time on Friday, February 14, 2025. All profits from the massive daytime rock event will go to charity — the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, Acorn Children’s Hospice, and Birmingham Children’s Hospital
