Lance Bass shared a «plot twist» in his journey with diabetes.

The former *NSYNC singer revealed that he had previously been misdiagnosed with type 2 diabetes, when in fact he has «type 1.5 diabetes».

«As you all know, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few years ago», - the singer said in a sponsored post for a continuous glucose monitor. «But when I was first diagnosed, I found it difficult to control my glucose levels, even when I made changes to my diet, medication, and exercise routine. Nothing seemed to work».

Back in March, the musician told PEOPLE magazine that he had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes during the COVID pandemic and that «I'm really trying to figure out how to deal with it».

Like type 1 diabetes, type 1.5 diabetes — also known as latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) — is an autoimmune disease that develops when the pancreas stops producing insulin, according to the Mayo Clinic. The patient then needs synthetic insulin, administered through injections or a pump attached to the body, to regulate blood glucose levels.

Unlike typical diabetes diagnoses, LADA develops slowly in adults over 30 years old. Usually, «people who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, who are slim and physically active, or have lost weight effortlessly, may have LADA».

The American Diabetes Association also confirmed that LADA symptoms are similar to symptoms of other forms of diabetes and may include excessive thirst, extreme fatigue, tingling and numbness in the limbs.

Since the disease develops slowly, a person can usually manage symptoms with a healthy lifestyle, dietary changes, and exercise, but eventually may need insulin injections.

«I was so disappointed, and it really affected me because I just felt like I was really sick, and I couldn’t figure it out», - Bass told Yahoo! Life in an interview published on July 24. «I didn’t realize I had type 1.5, so I was doing some wrong things».

However, with the correct diagnosis and lifestyle changes, Bass was able to feel better and even wrote in his Instagram post that he «feels more confident and in control than ever 💪».

«The older I get, the more I realize that I need to take care of my body. That’s why I work out when I can», - he explained. «Physical exercise is very important now […] I have a good setup at home, and I find 15 minutes here, 20 minutes there»
