A New York resident, Lenyo Moore, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his neighbor, her friend, and one of the dogs during a dispute related to the animals' barking. Prosecutors reported that the sentence was handed down nearly three years after Moore allegedly approached his neighbor, Jacqueline Bilini, and opened fire while she was walking dogs with Levawn Harvin in Manhattan.
Moore, 42, fired more than a dozen shots at close range, killing 57-year-old Bilini, who was struck in the forehead in the Washington Heights area on the evening of September 29, 2023. One of the shots hit Harvin in the neck, damaging major blood vessels and leading to his death. Bilini’s dog, named Zeus, was also killed.
According to police, the shooting was part of a «ongoing conflict» related to Bilini’s dogs barking. In February 2023, Moore allegedly injured one of the dogs, and in April of the same year, he attempted to break down the door to Bilini’s apartment, resulting in her breaking her arm. When Moore continued to try to enter her home, he struck a hammer through a gap in the door, injuring one of the people trying to help Bilini.
Following this, a restraining order was issued against Moore. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg noted that Bilini took the right step in reporting the violence, but her efforts led to tragic consequences.
After the shooting, Moore fled but was later arrested in an apartment in Brooklyn, where he was found hiding under a bed. In December, he was convicted of first and second-degree murder, illegal possession of a weapon, and animal cruelty.
Moore’s defense attorney did not respond to a request for comment. In an interview with Bilini’s family, her brother, Jose Bilini, stated that his sister, Harvin, and their dog did not deserve such a fate.
