Leon Marchand exploded the 2024 Olympics. The famous French swimmer is known for his unique skills in individual medley and butterfly competitions. Leon entered the international arena with iconic performances at both the European Championships and the World Championships. He has won several medals and broke Michael Phelps' last record by more than a second, winning gold in the men’s 400-meter individual medley at the 2024 Games.

Hollywood Life has gathered all the necessary information about the swimming champion below.

The athlete was born in Toulouse, France, and is currently 22 years old.

In 2021, Leon left France and moved to the United States to train at the University of Arizona with the support of coach Bob Bowman, known for his coaching method with Michael. This was a turning point in Leon’s career as he continued to impress the world at international competitions. At the 2022 World Championships in Budapest, Marchand won gold in the individual medley at 200 and 400 meters, setting a European record in the 400-meter individual medley.

Coach Bowman explained how they work together during a previous interview with SwimSwam.

«The last thing you want to do with a high-level swimmer is make them dependent on their coach», - Bob noted. «Leon knows very well what he needs to do and how to do it. We have also created routines that are mostly automatic at this competition. He only needs to know when his event starts, and that allows him to know when he will warm up, when he will put on his swimsuit, when he will go to the waiting room, what to do after — he has the whole plan. He doesn’t need to make many decisions at the competition, and that’s intentional, because the last thing you want to do at the Olympics is try to figure it out. It should be part of your DNA at that moment».

Although he is a top swimmer, Leon is a college student studying computer science at the University of Arizona.

Leon’s father, Xavier Marchand, and mother, Celine Bonne, raised him in the competitive life of a swimmer. Both parents participated in various Olympic Games in the 1990s.

Although he is originally from France and represents his country at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Leon reportedly lives in Austin, Texas
