Linsey Davis shared her struggle with fibroids: a story of health and supporting others

Lindsey Davis, Emmy award winner and ABC News anchor, opens up about her personal health struggle that she silently battled for over ten years. In August 2025, she told PEOPLE magazine that she has been living with fibroids since her first diagnosis 13 years ago. «I suffered in silence. It’s not something I would talk about with anyone other than my gynecologist», - she shared. Her decision to speak out comes at a time when other prominent women, including Lupita Nyong’o, have recently shared their own experiences with fibroids, helping to raise awareness about the condition that affects millions of women, especially Black women, and encouraging others to seek necessary help.
When Lindsey was first diagnosed 13 years ago, she was told that the condition was moderate, but over time the fibroids grew, and her symptoms worsened. By 2020, she was experiencing heavy, prolonged menstrual cycles, severe bloating, and fatigue — symptoms that affected both her comfort and confidence. Last year, she underwent a myomectomy to remove six fibroids, which brought temporary relief.
Less than two years later, her symptoms returned, and doctors discovered 13 new fibroids. «I started feeling a small lump protruding from the left side of my lower abdomen», - she said.
Faced with the choice between another myomectomy, uterine fibroid embolization, or hysterectomy, Davis chose the latter, citing a desire for a permanent solution. Scheduled for August 15, 2025, the procedure marked, as she described it, the opportunity to live without the discomfort and unpredictability that had defined so much of her life.
Although she learned about her fibroid diagnosis before marrying her husband Paul Robertson in 2013 — and knowing that the condition could complicate pregnancy — Lindsey continued to enjoy her only child, son Aiden, born in 2014.
«During my pregnancy, they said the fibroid grows along with the fetus, but everything should be fine because at a certain point the child wins. And that’s what happened», - she recalled. «I gave birth to my son and had no worries».
Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus, often in a woman’s reproductive years. These growths, also called myomas or leiomyomas, are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue and can vary in size, number, and location.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama revealed in her memoir «Becoming» that she underwent fibroid removal surgery, while actress Gabrielle Union has openly discussed her multiple procedures and fertility issues related to fibroids. Cynthia Bailey, star of «The Real Housewives of Atlanta», - also shared her journey with fibroids on national television. Oscar-winning actress Lupita was diagnosed with uterine fibroids in March 2014, the same year she won her Oscar for the film «12 Years a Slave», - but publicly disclosed her diagnosis in July 2025.
According to the University of Michigan Medical Center, Black women are diagnosed with fibroids about three times more often than white women, are more prone to developing them at an earlier age, and experience larger and more numerous tumors, leading to more severe symptoms
