A California resident, Laura Lee Yuricks, was ordered to pay a fine as part of a criminal case after being charged with five felonies for illegally registering her dog to vote in two elections. According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Yuricks submitted ballots on behalf of her dog, Maya Jean Yuricks, during the recall election of California Governor Gavin Newsom in 2021 and in the primary elections in 2022.

According to the prosecution, Maya’s vote was counted in the 2021 election but not in the 2022 primary elections. Yuricks was charged in September 2025 after she «bragged about her crimes» on social media, including posting a photo of Maya with a «I Voted» sticker and a mail-in ballot in January 2022.

The case was fully resolved this week after Yuricks pleaded guilty in April to one count of knowingly registering a fictitious person to vote and agreed to pay for four billboards featuring her dog. Yuricks was required to pay $ 1,500 for the four billboards displaying a photo of Maya with a «I Voted» sticker. These billboards will be visible along highways 55 and 22 in Orange County until the state’s midterm elections on November 3.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office released a photo of the billboard, which reads: «Don't be a dog. Voter fraud is a crime. If you can’t vote legally, don’t vote. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will prosecute». The resolution of Yuricks' case comes nearly two years after the Orange County Registrar of Voters notified the District Attorney’s Office of the alleged voter fraud on October 28, 2024.
