Lauren Graham recalled a controversial storyline in the series «Gilmore Girls». In an episode of the podcast «Hey Dude… The ‘90s Called!», - which aired on October 7, the actress talked about the fifth and sixth seasons when her character, Lorelai Gilmore, was in a feud with her daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel) after Rory decided to take a break from her studies at Yale University.
Graham admitted that it was difficult for her to play this role and she asked the show’s creator Amy Sherman-Palladino why such a storyline might not resonate with viewers. She noted that this plot seemed «out of character» for Lorelai and Rory. Sherman-Palladino, according to Graham, argued that the relationship between mother and daughter is not always «idyllic», - especially when the show includes dramatic elements.
Graham also shared that the sixth season of «Gilmore Girls» became «quite dramatic». The series, which aired from 2000 to 2007, followed the life of Lorelai, who gave birth to Rory at 16 and left her wealthy parents' home to raise her daughter in the small town of Stars Hollow. The show focused on the friendship between Lorelai and Rory, as well as Lorelai’s complicated relationship with her mother Emily (Kelly Bishop).
Fans actively discussed the feud between Lorelai and Rory in the sixth season, which occurred after Rory faced criticism regarding her journalism career. Many felt that Rory’s decision to temporarily drop out of school was immature, and they disagreed with Lorelai’s choice to cut off communication with her daughter. However, others pointed out that this storyline was important for character development.
In another segment of the podcast, Graham recalled the popularity of «Gilmore Girls» today, noting that the show did not achieve great success during its original run. She said that the series had low ratings and aired on The WB, which was not widely known at the time. Graham added that the show’s title might have deterred some viewers who thought it was only for young people or women.
Lauren Graham and Amy Sherman-Palladino will also appear in an upcoming HBO Max documentary about «Gilmore Girls» and are working on a book about the show, set to be released in the fall of 2027.
