The hunt for Olympic gold ended for one Paraguayan swimmer, but when it was also reported that Luana Alonso had been removed from the Olympic village, the Olympic champion responded to dispel any «false information» circulating about her dismissal.

The 20-year-old athlete addressed her story on Instagram on Monday, August 5, with a statement regarding the alleged drama at the Games. «I just wanted to clarify that I was never removed or excluded from anywhere», - she wrote, according to the Spanish translation.

«I don’t want to make any statements, but I also won’t allow lies to influence me», - she added.

According to the Daily Mail, Alonso became a «distraction» when she no longer competed due to her alleged disrespect for the rules of the Olympic village.

«Her presence creates an inappropriate atmosphere in the Paraguay team», - said Larissa Schärer, head of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, in a statement on Monday. «We thank her for following instructions, as it was her own decision not to stay in the Athletes' Village».

President of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, Camilo Perez, also noted in an interview with a Paraguayan radio station: «We are a serious team that aims to compete, not just stroll around».

Alonso, while in Paris, shared moments of her travels on social media, from visits to the Eiffel Tower to selfies with other Olympians. She even spent time at Disneyland Paris.

A few days later, the Paraguayan Olympic Committee confirmed that she had violated the rules set by the organization. «Leaving the village is not normal», - said Perez. He classified the episode as a «serious act of indiscipline».

Alonso showed unsatisfactory results at the Olympic Games this year — she finished her race in sixth place with a time three seconds slower than her personal record. She tearfully announced her retirement from the sport on television before sharing another emotional message on Instagram. Since then, she has returned to the United States, where she is studying at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

In an interview with Claro Sports, Alonso reiterated her feelings about retiring, saying, «I swam for so long, 18 years, and I have so many feelings. Unfortunately, I made the decision to stop, and I am glad that my last race will be at the Olympic Games». She also apologized to her country, Paraguay, for not meeting expectations.

The swimmer participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and holds several Paraguayan records in butterfly disciplines. Her achievements have been a source of national pride and inspiration for young swimmers in Paraguay
