Luis Rojas Cabrera, the owner of a holistic clinic in New York, has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of a 27-year-old woman who died an hour after receiving a rejuvenation injection at his practice. Prosecutors reported this.
Cabrera, who allegedly operated his clinic in the Bronx without the necessary medical license, has also been charged with second-degree manslaughter, criminal negligence, first-degree reckless endangerment, and unauthorized practice. These charges are related to the death of Elizabeth Baron, which occurred on July 19. According to authorities, the NAD+ injection caused Baron to lose consciousness, after which she was taken to the hospital, where she died approximately an hour later.
According to Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark, Cabrera acted as a medical professional despite lacking a license to practice in New York State. Clark promised to seek justice for Baron’s family. An official conclusion from the New York Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was cardiac air embolism, caused by air entering the bloodstream through an intravenous catheter placed for the injection.
Cabrera’s clinic is now listed as closed on Google. On the clinic’s website, he presented himself as Dr. Luis A. Rojas, a surgeon and naturopath who uses his knowledge to integrate natural medicine and therapy. He is reportedly from the Dominican Republic and held a license for aesthetics in the U.S., but not for medicine.
Cabrera’s attorney, Donald Vogelman, stated that the second-degree murder charge is «absurd». He noted that there have been no cases in New York State where anyone has been convicted under similar circumstances. Vogelman added that Cabrera’s actions, such as calling for an ambulance and performing CPR, demonstrate that he cared for the patient and that this was an unfortunate accident.
At a hearing on October 6, Cabrera’s bail was set at $ 2 million cash or $ 7 million bond. He has pleaded not guilty.
