Famous dancer and «Dancing with the Stars» participant Louis van Amstel commented on judge Carrie Ann Inaba’s criticism regarding lifts during performances, amid Val Chmerkovskiy’s suspension from the show. In his Instagram post on October 17, he stated that Carrie Ann was right to point out the lift performed by two men with participant Harry Shum Jr.
During the «Super Bowl Night» episode on October 13, Carrie Ann criticized the use of additional dancers in Jenna Johnson’s routine with Harry, calling it an «illegal lift». She explained that a lift is considered any movement where one dancer is in the air with the support of their partner.
Carrie Ann’s criticism sparked heated discussions within the «Dancing with the Stars» community, involving former contestants Max Chmerkovskiy and Anna Trebunskaya. Louis noted that there is a valid complaint regarding how lifts are judged and pointed out the inconsistency in the scoring of Jenna Johnson’s performance with her husband Val, who, in his opinion, also executed a full lift but was not called out for it.
Louis emphasized that the rules of the show are not entirely clear and suggested changes to the regulations to explicitly state that lifts are prohibited both from partners and additional dancers. He also noted that Jenna might have exploited a loophole in the rules, as she did not lift Harry herself.
Jenna responded to the criticism, stating that she respects the judges' opinions and is open to their feedback. Meanwhile, Val Chmerkovskiy found himself at the center of a scandal due to his comments on social media, for which he was suspended from participating in the next episode. A representative from BBC Studios confirmed that his post was inappropriate and did not meet the show’s standards. In the next episode, he will be replaced by professional dancer Alan Bersten.
