Lupita Nyong’o is known for her powerful performances on screen, but recently she has been using her voice to shed light on a deep personal health issue: uterine fibroids. In a candid social media update, the Oscar winner shared her diagnosis and openly talked about the pain and difficulties she has faced behind the scenes.

The 42-year-old actress has sparked important conversations around a condition that affects millions of women but is often not discussed. Learn more about what uterine fibroids are, Nyong’o’s personal experience, and other celebrities who have shared their diagnoses below.

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus, often in a woman’s reproductive years. These growths, also called myomas or leiomyomas, are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue and can vary in size, number, and location.

Nyong’o was diagnosed with uterine fibroids in March 2014, the same year she won an Oscar for the film «12 Years a Slave». She publicly announced her diagnosis in July 2025, revealing that at the time doctors had found 30 fibroids that required surgical removal. For over a decade, she kept her experience a secret, admitting that she «suffered in silence».

«I started talking about my experience in private, and I realized that many women go through this», - she wrote on Instagram. «We are struggling alone with something that affects most of us. Don’t suffer in silence anymore!»

Treatment for uterine fibroids depends on a number of factors, including a person’s symptoms, age, reproductive goals, and the size or location of the fibroids. Mild cases can be managed with medications such as hormonal contraceptives to regulate bleeding or gonadotropin agonists to shrink fibroids. More invasive options include uterine artery embolization (UAE), which cuts off blood flow to the fibroids, and myomectomy, a surgical procedure to remove fibroids while preserving the uterus.

In severe or recurring cases, a hysterectomy — removal of the uterus — may be recommended. New treatment methods, such as MRI-guided focused ultrasound and radiofrequency ablation, offer less invasive alternatives with shorter recovery times.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama revealed in her memoir «Becoming» that she underwent surgery to remove fibroids, while actress Gabrielle Union has openly discussed her multiple procedures and fertility issues related to fibroids. Cynthia Bailey, star of «The Real Housewives of Atlanta», - has also shared her journey with fibroids on national television.

According to Michigan Medicine, Black women are diagnosed with fibroids about three times more often than white women, tend to develop them at an earlier age, and experience larger and more numerous growths that cause more severe symptoms
