Madonna opened the 2026 MTV VMAs with a performance and awards

At the 2026 MTV VMAs, Madonna opened the show with a vibrant performance that host Snoop Dogg described as «killer». The program, scheduled to start at 7:30 PM Eastern Time, was delayed by 22 minutes due to a football game, but that did not stop the artist from putting on a spectacle.
Madonna began with two songs: «Bring Your Love» featuring Sabrina Carpenter and «Danceteria» with Charli XCX and other guests. During the performance, she showcased high kicks and performed «Bring Your Love» while seated at a piano, accompanied by Sabrina. Madonna wore black boots and a silk black robe, while Sabrina opted for a black-and-white look with a beret.
After that, Madonna removed her robe and was carried by dancers to a platform that moved around the choir, performing choreography from her short film «Confessions II». The performance concluded with a scene in a men’s restroom for the performance of «Danceteria», - where Charli XCX emerged from a stall to talk about her rise to fame.
Among the participants were familiar faces from Madonna’s world, including her ex-boyfriend Tony Ward, DJ Fab Five Freddy, actress Julia Garner, and her friend Debi Mazar. Seth Rogen also participated in the show. The song featured a sample from Lou Reed’s famous track «Walk on the Wild Side», - which was highlighted by projections during the performance.
Madonna had not performed at the VMAs for the past 23 years. Throughout the evening, she stayed to see how many of her 13 nominations would turn into wins, starting with the award for Best Collaboration, which she shared with Sabrina. In her acceptance speech, Madonna joked with Sabrina about her slow response to the collaboration offer but praised her professionalism and noted that it was wonderful to work together. Sabrina simply responded, «Everyone — it’s Madonna!»
At the end of the evening, Madonna received the Artist of the Year award, thanking her co-writer and producer Stuart Price, manager Guy Oseary, and MTV, reminding everyone that she performed at the first VMAs in 1984.
