No one should confuse McKayla Maroney with anyone else. The gymnast, who helped the US team win gold at the 2012 Olympics in London, supported her friend Simone Biles in her latest Instagram post, which fans consider a clear criticism of comments made by McKayla Skinner about the current Olympic team.

Sharing a photo of herself, Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, and Grace McCallum, 27-year-old Simone jokingly captioned her post on Tuesday, July 30: «Lack of talent, lazy, Olympic champions». In response, McKayla, 28, commented: «It can’t get more iconic than this. She really found it [sic]».

Referring to the US team’s apparent nickname «Do dumb stuff and find out», - the former gymnast added in her comment: «I feel like I need to apologize to get my first name back».

Last month, a video surfaced in which 27-year-old McKayla criticized the «talent» and «work ethic» of the current Olympic team.

«Besides Simone, I feel like the talent and depth just isn’t there like it used to be», - the athlete said. «Just notice that, I mean, obviously, a lot of the girls aren’t working as hard. The girls just don’t have the work ethic».

Clarifying that her comments do not always apply to the current team, McKayla added that she is «very proud of them». Furthermore, she noted that her remarks are «more about returning to my own training hall, just the work ethic is different from what it was when we did gymnastics in the Martha Karolyi era».

«And I’m not defending Martha or saying she did things right, I’m just saying it was different», - McKayla explained. «So anyway, sorry for anything that came out of context or seemed offensive. It was never my intention. And seriously, throughout the whole video I was so happy for the girls, and it was so fun to watch the trials and do a live stream with everyone».

According to a statement obtained by PEOPLE, McKayla apologized to the team, claiming that she «had no intention to offend or disrespect any of the athletes or diminish their hard work».

«Your hard work and dedication paid off, and I congratulate each of you», - she said. «After reflecting, I compared the 'Martha era' to the current era. I acknowledge that I did not fully cope with the emotional and verbal abuse I endured under Martha’s leadership, which may have led to my hurtful comments. I take full responsibility for what I said, and I sincerely apologize. For me, it is most important that the sport I love continues on a path of healing and provides a positive environment for all. I wish you all the best in Paris. I will be cheering for all of you! Go Team USA!»
