US Congressman Marjorie Taylor Greene shocked the country on November 21, 2025, when she resigned from her position in Congress. The decision came amid her disagreements with Donald Trump, despite years of being one of the president’s most vocal supporters. So why did she leave the House of Representatives?

Here we will break down Greene’s full statement and the reason for her departure from Congress starting in 2026.

Yes, Greene announced her resignation from Congress in a statement published on X. She concluded it, stating: «I will be stepping down, my last day will be January 5, 2026».

I have always represented the average American man and woman as a member of the House of Representatives, so I have always been despised in Washington and never…

Greene left for various reasons, but in her lengthy statement she cited Trump’s attacks on her, the recent 43-day government shutdown, and the failure of both parties to reduce rising costs of living in America as the reasons for her departure.

«I have too much self-respect and dignity, I love my family too much, and I do not want my dear district to endure a painful and hateful primary battle against me by the president, for whom we all fought, only to fight and win my elections, while Republicans will likely lose in the elections», - Greene wrote. «And, in turn, I am expected to defend the president from impeachment after he hatefully poured tens of millions of dollars on me and tried to destroy me».

She continued: «No matter which way the political pendulum swings, Republican or Democrat, nothing improves for the average American man or woman. Debt grows. Corporate and global interests remain Washington’s darlings. American jobs continue to be replaced, whether by illegal labor or legal labor through visas or simply moved overseas. Small businesses continue to be swallowed up by large corporations. Hard-earned tax dollars of Americans always fund foreign wars, foreign aid, and foreign interests».

Trump continued to call Greene «Marjorie Traitor Brown» in a statement on Truth Social, but thanked her for her service to the country.

«Marjorie 'Traitor' Brown, due to FALLING poll numbers and not wanting to face a primary challenger with strong Trump support (where she would have no chance of winning!), decided to 'throw in the towel,'» Trump wrote in his statement. «Her relationships with the WORST Republican congressman in decades, Tom Massie of Kentucky, also known as Rand Paul Jr., because he votes against the Republican Party (and really good legislation!), did not help her. For some reason, mostly because I refused to answer her endless stream of phone calls, Marjorie went the wrong way. Nevertheless, I will always appreciate Marjorie and thank her for her service to our country!»

There is currently no clear choice for Greene’s replacement, but primary elections in Georgia will take place in May 2026. Therefore, Governor Brian Kemp may either announce special elections after Greene leaves in January, or her district in the state will not be represented on Capitol Hill until the primary elections
