Maria Tomey admired how the love between Tom Holland and Zendaya blossomed while working with them on the Spider-Man movie. During a recent appearance at Fan Expo 2024 in Toronto, the 59-year-old actress marveled at the «huge» talent of the couple.
«I think one of my favorite moments was just watching Tom and Zendaya grow and fall in love, and seeing their phenomenal talent», - Marisa said. «Just being amazed from the very beginning. I’m thrilled».
Noting that «some people are just made for» the industry, the star of My Cousin Vinny added about Tom, 28, and Zendaya, 27: «They have huge, huge star power, huge power, and they manage to be real people at the same time and just, they are multifaceted».
In addition to shining on the set of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, Marisa acknowledged that other projects of Tom and Zendaya have showcased their talents.
«They can do it all!» she added. «They sing, dance, act, do stunts, create fashion. I mean, what don’t they do? They are incredible, incredible people».
Throughout the three Spider-Man films, Marisa played the role of Aunt May to Tom’s character, Peter Parker, also known as Spider-Man. In the film Spider-Man: No Way Home, Aunt May is killed by the Green Goblin. Tom and Marisa share an emotional moment on screen as May dies in Peter’s arms. But just before her death, May utters the famous line that other Peters from other universes heard from their Uncle Ben: «With great power comes great responsibility».
May’s death affects Peter towards the end of No Way Home, setting him on a path of vengeance until Peters Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire help him overcome it. Zendaya plays Peter’s girlfriend, MJ, in all three films. Her and Peter’s fate remains uncertain as everyone’s memories of Peter are erased.
Zendaya and Tom first met in 2016 while working on the film Spider-Man: Homecoming. Becoming close friends, they confirmed their relationship at the end of 2021. Since then, they have been inseparable and openly supported each other’s careers. However, they have also managed to keep much of their romantic relationship secret to maintain privacy
